this is a weird af question i'm sure but what would the avatar kids be like if they hadn't ran away to the institute/not realized how messed up their upbringings were?

Oooooooo, now THIS will be fun to answer ((tbh, this has been on my mind for awhile now, so thanks for the excuse to infodump))!!! I’m gonna try doing stuff for ALL the kids, but it’ll be a bit hard considering the fact that most of them are so unlikely to actually submit to their avatardom.

Jonathan Sims: His destiny is a bit of a toss-up, since it depends on which of his parents’ teachings he would end up following. If he takes more after Elias, he’ll end up becoming the perfect Eye avatar anyone could ask for; an endless slew of information and knowledge, not to mention loyal to his patron and his father. If he ends up following in Gertrude’s footsteps though, he’ll use his powers much more sparingly as he grows older and be about 40% more likely to get arrested for arson.

Martin Blackwood: This is going off of the idea that the Lonely’s first big ritual involving him actually worked, otherwise the only other option would’ve been Peter not rescuing him, in which case he would’ve disappeared forever into the fog. In this scenario however, the Lonely accepts Martin as a more physical vessel for itself, and he continues on as a more or less lifeless husk that just swallows everything in it’s sight. Very sad all around.

Tim Stoker: In the event that he never runs away, Tim would complete his training as a dancer and allow the circus to change him into something barely resembling a human anymore (I haven’t actually listened to much of The Mechanisms, but maybe he’d look something like the Tim toy soldier guy??? I like him). He's Danny’s right hand man, as well as the circus’ muscle when things get particularly dicey.

Danny Stoker: He would’ve ended up very spoiled and damn near as conniving as Sasha; takes a lot after Nikola and makes her proud at every opportunity, making him a bit of a mama’s boy. Would be an incredible ringmaster, praying primarily on those attending the circus with their family members (especially sets of siblings). Becomes much more powerful overtime, almost completely growing into a monster in the process.

Sasha James: An absolute master of manipulation and trickery, using her hacking skills to start the Web down a path of internet fraud and impersonation on a massive scale. Ends up being rivals with Eye!Jon, leading to them having a very Spy vs Spy dynamic that’s this close to them becoming friends, but alas, their parents hate each other and they know it. Ten times smarter than anyone else belonging to the Web.

Melanie King: Say hello to Grifter’s Bone’s new lead bassist and singer! She takes up the mantle by the time she’s thirteen or so, putting a more young punk spin on the band’s music, which draws in younger victims for the Slaughter’s influence. Has a thousand something knives on her at one time, and has a hard time not joining in on the riots the band starts.

Julia Montauk: In the event that Trevor can’t keep her from succumbing to the Hunt’s influence, she becomes a brutal, violent creature that stays primarily in her Hunt form, only turning human when she wants to draw out a hunt/trick people into thinking she’s one of them. If things go really bad, she ends up killing Trevor at some point to prove she’s stronger than him (and immediately regretting it).

Alice “Daisy” Tonner: I feel like her fall would be similar to canon, with either Trevor never finding her, which leads her to follow her canon path, or she joins Julia in fighting back against Trevor’s desire to save them, eventually running away to hunt on her own and become a fully fledged werewolf. Unlike Julia, she never turns human after a certain point, and eventually she goes on to kill Julia after she crosses into her territory.

Oliver Banks: I honestly have very few ideas on how he would end up in this sort of AU, seeing as he’s kinda already on a path that’s very aligned with the End’s influence, but if he completely gave in and did whatever it wanted, he’d probably become something akin to a grim reaper, stalking people in their dreams and making sure they’ll die the way they’re fated to. Might take an apprenticeship under Nathaniel Throp.

Georgie Barker: Similar to Oliver, I’m not 100% sure what to do for her. I feel like the Admiral is what’s keeping her from falling, so without him she’d definitely become a completely fearless and relentless avatar of the End, carrying out similar death sentences to Oliver, except she actually makes more people die than is necessary. If Jon follows Gertrude’s teachings in this scenario, then he starts trying to help her escape her powers.

Mike Crew: He’s kinda already becoming a fully fledged avatar of the Vast, but like Oliver, I can see him going further than he has. He’d be almost exactly like his canon self, except he’d have a much harder time blending in with modern society, relying on his connection to Simon and the rest of the Fairchild family for help getting by. If he ended up getting abandoned though, he might become more lonely over time... 👀👀👀 Martin could certainly use a “friend”

Helen Richardson: Seeing as Michael and Gertrude finding her is what’s essentially saved her already (I imagine she’ll still have Spiral powers for the rest of her life, but she could never become an avatar later on in the CA AU while she’s being raised by Michael), in this scenario she’s never rescued, and she either dies in the Spiral due to neglect, or she becomes similar to Martin, acting as a mere vessel for her patron.

Jane Prentiss: I’m still a bit iffy on how to write Jane, seeing as I added her after the AU was already kinda started (and also because I don’t remember much about her from S1), but I imagine without Adelard saving her, she would’ve eventually left Amherst to be raised by the Corruption in a more direct fashion, making her like Helen and Martin, but with more free will than them.

So all in all, Jon vs Sasha would be a big conflict with the Stoker Brothers occasionally getting involved just so they can Cause Problems On Purpose, Martin, Helen, and Jane are the resident “ghosts” that haunt everyone, Julia and Daisy are feral, Mike can’t cope with this shit, Georgie and Oliver are essentially grim reapers, and Melanie is the only motherfucker having any fun.

These are some very sad/unfortunate scenarios, huh? At least this is all speculative and in no way canon to the CA AU as a whole; it’s just a fun lil’ idea to think about! Thanks so much for the ask, Anon!

Day 13 to 15: Saturday 28th of March to Monday 30th of March

Alright, here’s the summary post as I promise. Let’s start by the beginning should we? Ok, I’m not really sure about when everything happened so, it may not be in this order but nevermind, right?

Day 13: Saturday 28th of March 

I bet you all asking what happened after this all blowing mind adventure that I got on my own. As I told you, I spend the night with Bucky and it was so peaceful. I woke up curled up in his arm. It was smelling good and I felt great. No nightmares, no headaches, no anxiety attack. And cutest thing ever, Bucky was awake (since probably a moment) but he didn’t move for me not to wake up. 

We had one of the greatest day I think. Basically, it was cold outside so we decided to take the Breakfast inside all together of course. My fathers seemed relief to saw me better and more peaceful. After that, I decided to showto Bucky some cartoons because the guy doesn’t have any pop culture. We watch Frozen. He kind of like it (probably because he never saw cartoons before) so he thought it was beautiful, well animated, funny, dramatic, sad, and pretty. So I thought if he likes it, he has to love the second one. (No matter what you all haters say, I love this movie with all my soul. Even if there is way too much songs. It’s still really much better than the first one. And Elsa? God damn it! She’s amazing! The way she finally gets herself free (with the metaphor of her hair getting less and less tight that so clever) and the way she finally takes her place in the world, she understands who she is, what’s her role. This is great.) ANYWAY !

Bucky loved it. Of course he loved it, he’s smart. Haha! I just love the fact that he still discovers simple things you know? He could be so impressed by normal day life things. Cartoons, Smartphone, 3D movies, or even video games and musics. I just have the feeling is a bit like Tarzan you know? I mean, he never had the occasion to watch that much movies or listen to musics and he got the chance to discover it now like I wish I could forget some things just to rediscover it once again. Don’t you? 

Alright, after Frozen and frozen 2, we decided to go do another pictionnary and we ended up drawing again. That was awesome. Bucky is really talented to do stickfigures !  🤣

Anyway, it was another great day, and nothing that much excited happened this day. Maybe the fact that Bucky came to sleep with me again. I love this big tall warm pillow.... 

Day 14: Sunday 29th of March

Get help ! Bucky got a Smartphone ! 

Alright, why do I say get help? My fathers got the incredible idea to offer a smartphone to Bucky. It’s not a problem so far right? Wait for it. We were lazily laying down on the couch with Bucky while I was explaining to him all the amazing thing he could do with his brand new phone you know? Guess what happened? He opened google to do a research on me. Not that much embarassing so far. I mean, I got beautiful pictures on magazine, I’m the youngest genius on the planet and the smartest actually so... It’s kind of great to try to impress him a bit. But the guy just dig even more in the internet and instead of impressing him with my amazing brain because I made a robot when I was six and all this shit. No, the guy just find out about my tentative of being an actor and fall on that:

Like, look at me ! What’s wrong with... Everything?!! In case you didn’t knew I try to be an actor as much as I want to take back my father’s Company. I even picked an actor name: Robert Downey Jr. Kind of cool right? This movie is named “Johnny Be Good” and trust me, you don’t wanna watch that. My character’s name is Leo and he doesn’t make any fucking sense! Like what the hell? It gets really embarassing when I watched the movie the first time but could it get more embarassing that right now?  Bucky insisted so much to watch this movie that we finally did. And my fathers were so happy to watch it once again that they came with us. They were basically three fucking idiots who were laughing so much about me and my nonsense in this movie. I never felt so humiliated. I never felt so ashamed.

And I guess I never laughed so much about myself. Like never. I mean at the beginning I was so embarassed that I didn’t say nothing and just looked at them laughed about me. But after all, it’s funny right? I mean, why do I have to be this stupid asshole who can’t laugh about himself? Even Steve laugh at his own behaviour sometimes. This was one of the funniest and happiest moment that we spend in containement for now. We laughed so much. Bucky couldn’t stop crying. He was turning red, hiding behind a pillow to avoid us to see his face. It was adorable. Once again, how this guy he’s doing to be so cute? He’s a super soldier. Super soldiers are not suppose to be cute. They’re supposed to be hot fucking barbarian. And the guy he’s just a fucking puppy! 😍 God, I’m so happy that we adopted this guy.  ... .... Wait a minute...  ... He’s not going to be my adopted brother, right? No way. I will not accept that. It can’t be. But actually, I don’t want him to go back to the Orphan house, you know? Bucky belongs here. With us. I want him to stay.

Day 15: Monday 30th of March

This day was a bit less funny. Maybe because my fathers decided it was the good moment to talk. Actually, they were right. I needeed to spit everything out. 

How it happened? Well, I woke up in my bed with Bucky who was playing Sims next to me. God damn it he’s building a Mansion for my Sims, I can’t wait to put them inside. We get up and go take breakfast in the garden. A beautiful, warm day. After that, I wanted to work on the arm again. Howard was in his lab already, I mean, nothing weird right? But Steve was there too. I understood quickly that my Dad was  picking a bit of blood to my other dad. They explain to me that Howard was doing research on the serum to try to find an antidote to the Virus that was running out there. I asked Howard if I could help him later. He told me maybe so I don’t know if it’s going to happen.  Anyway, I worked on the arm for 30 minutes before I noticed that my fathers were looking at  me with insistance. 

“Anthony, are you ok?” Howard asked before getting closer.  So, it was the moment right? They were both staring at me with patience. 

“I’m sorry, dads. I didn’t mean to make you worried. To be honest, I did something bad. And I’m so sorry about it.  - Tony, we talked about it. What happened with Stane was not your fault... (Did I forgot to mention that I had a conversation with Steve about Afghanistan? I really need to do this post about it...) - I’m not talking about Obadiah. I said by cuting Steve. Dad H., I know you always forbid me to hack your files and before you get pissed off please, let me explain. Few days ago, I had those crazy nightmares about someone called the Winter Soldier. I didn’t knew where I heard that before I actually remembered that you two talked about it when I was 12 maybe. I get curious, I know it’s bad, I’m so sorry. But I was so sure there was a link between the Winter soldier and Bucky... And I was right, wasn’t I? Bucky is the kid, the first one. The Winter Soldier. Right? I looked at everything in your computer. I know the Truth now. It’s so awful... The things they did to him.”

At this point, I started shaking. I didn’t wanted my fathers to be pissed off against me. But I did some crap, so it was obvious they were about to kick my ass or worst forbid me to go in the lab for months.

But, to my complete surprise, they stare at me without a word like nothing at all. 

“Howard, he succeed to hack your Winter Soldier’s files?” Asked Steve under his breathe.  “I heard that, Steve!” Mumbled Howard in answer.  ”Didn’t you tell me you put your best defense on it? Like you couldn’t even hacked it yourself if you wanted to?”  ”Yes, I did, Stevie. Yes, I did....” They were looking so fucking confused  like:

I thought I broke them for a second until Howard get to me by clearing his throat. He was still looking confused. But he managed to say: “Hum... Tony, listen... What you did was really bad. ... Wait, how the hell did you do that? ... No, Nevermind, I just wanted to say... I mean, holy shit! - What’s your father wants to say is... We are so proud of you, Tony.  - Steve ! - What? It’s true. We never imagine we could have the chance to have a son so incredibly clever and determinate. And everyday, you keep surprising us. Even if it was not the good thing to do. We asked you not to dig too deeply in this story, didn’t we? “  He sighed before taking me in his arms with Howard. 

“We didn’t wanted you to have more nightmares. It’s not a story for a kid, son. “ He said to me.  “I am not a kid anymore” I mumbled in the arms of my two dads.

This moment was so sweet and relaxing. I felt so much better after that.  Really much better. I guess I just needeed to be a bit cheared up by my dads. They were not that much pissed off. They were actually a bit lost I guess. Howard couldn’t stop asking me how did I do that. I will maybe tell him one day. Who knows? Oh, and good new by the way !I finally finished the arm of Bucky. I can’t wait to give it to him tomorrow. Anyway, it’s late again. The time pass crazily fast when I’m writing. SO I give you the rest of the summary tomorrow, right? Retail is changing a lot as online shopping takes more market share, shopping habits change, and as high streets gradually reconfigure. There’s a sense that the middle ground (average products and services, average locations) is disappearing: products and services that rely on shoppers having poor information about price or product complexity are struggling because the internet is really good at ironing out information asymmetries like that. Product and services have to become clearer, more distinct.

Takeaway.com buys Just Eat

Dutch meal delivery co Takeaway.com is buying Just Eat for about £6 billion. It says the combined company will handle more orders than rivals Uber Eats, GrubHub and Delivery Hero, and will be second only to China’s Meituan. (Why does delivered prepared-food matter? 66% of shoppers buy prepared food items from a retail location at least three times a month.)

Elsewhere: supermarket Carrefour is buying Dejbox, whose thing is delivering lunches to office workers.

Cummings: “I don’t really know what I’m looking for”

A blog post written by the Prime Minister’s senior advisor says there are “some profound problems at the core of how the British state makes decisions” and calls for weirdos and misfits to apply for jobs. The civil service does need modernising. The landscape (digital, Brexit, ageing population, climate change etc) will need us to reset and re-make many things. So, leaving aside your political affiliations, problems at the core is reasonably correct. 

However the post also feels a bit... technophilic, thrashy, a bit internet copy-paste-y, a bit performatively clever. It’s clear that Cummings and team are smart, that they admire parts of tech startup culture (it would have been interesting if Downing Street were saying things like this when GDS started.) But it’s not so clear that they understand how institutions and culture are (re)formed, and how people are central to it all. It looks like the general approach might be to tear everything down and rebuild. Possibly including the people they hire: “I’ll bin you within weeks if you don’t fit — don’t complain later because I made it clear now.” So the 2022 confessionals of ex-employees should be interesting.

Scale: saving time with faster logins

GOV.UK: £40 million investment to reduce NHS staff login times: 

“The investment will support projects similar to that seen at Alder Hey Hospital in Liverpool, which implemented single sign-on technology and reduced time spent logging into multiple computer systems from 1 minute 45 seconds to just 10 seconds. With almost 5,000 logins a day, it saved over 130 hours of staff time and freed up their time to focus on patient care”

That’s 130 staff hours saved every day, in one hospital. Small improvements at scale can have big outcomes (when the Co-op introduced SmartGap to help shelf re-stocking in stores, it saved 15 minutes per store daily, which adds up to 27 years and 5,000 trees saved every year).

What if mobile phone hackers sold you good customer service?

“SIM swaps” are when a hacker calls your mobile phone company, persuades them that they’re you with some of your personal information, and then has the mobile phone co point your mobile number at a new SIM card. The hacker now receives your calls and text messages and all of the one-time passwords used in two factor authentication and “forgot password” features etc. (The usual way to protect yourself from this is to put a PIN on your mobile phone account.) But:

SIM swappers are escalating. Hackers now reaching directly into AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint systems to perform SIM swaps themselves. Seen screenshots of this in action with T-Mobile and AT&T; Sprint confirmed issue.

That raises the interesting prospect of hackers adding parallel business lines. If a hacker has access to a mobile phone company’s account and customer support systems, would you pay them a reasonable fee to get faster and higher quality customer support on your mobile phone account? (And if they were offering that, would you also buy their “we promise no hacking” insurance policy?)

Predictions: “A library of mouth feels”

It’s the season of predictions for the year and the decade. Food in 2050: bacon grown on blades of grass and bioreactor chicken nuggets. Mmm, if “we can make a library of mouth feels and texture at a nanoscale”... why don’t we just grow the food inside the mouth, or in the gut? (newsletter handwaves wildly)

kriz Wanders in Taiwan: New Year Escape 2019

DIY travel is in nowadays, but we have to admit that having a DO-IT-YOURSELF Travel in a country wherein you are unfamiliar and you can not understand their language is a bit difficult, but me and my friends were able to pull it off when we took our vacation last December 2018 to spend our New year in Taipei, Taiwan. I’m going to share our 6 day itinerary and some of our travel hacks. So if you are interested, keep on reading this blog.

TIP #1 ALWAYS BOOK AHEAD OF TIME!

So this is my first time to travel overseas, and luckily, I don’t have to get a visa for this trip since currently, Taiwan is visa free for Filipinos. Originally, my friends and I were planning to spend the first quarter of 2019 in Cebu for Sinulog. But, suddenly they had a change of plan and I had to choose if I will come with them, or I will just go to Cebu on my own. And that’s how I ended up with this trip. Taiwan was not in the list of the countries that I wanted to visit, but as I come to wander around, I fell in love with the place. And so with the people who are very nice to us.

We booked our flight way ahead of time, so we can get a lower price for the plane tickets and my friend booked a place via airBnB, which is supposed to be cheap if only, we were able to book ahead of time. There is a big price increase if you will book a month before your stay, which happened to us.

So does with the place that we're going to stay, we didn't book ahead of time. When we were doing a canvas like 6 mos before our stay, the price was cheap, but when we alreadydecided to book a place, few months before our flight, that was the time that the price suddenly went up.

So always remember, BOOK AHEAD OF TIME!

You can really save some money if you will book ahead of time from the tickets to the place that you will stay. What happened to me was, I was so confident that I won't be needing an extra baggage allowance, since it will just be a week of stay, but in the end, I realized that I need an extra baggage, which lead me to a pricey addition of extra baggage. If you will just add a week before your flight, then it would cost you a lot. That was my case, and I regret it.

TIP # 2 FREE WATER @ the airport

We arrived in Taiwan at around 1AM, most stores in the airport is already closed at that time. Since most stores are not open when we arrived, the choice that we have is the 7-11, it's open 24 hours near the airport food court. But if you just want a water and you don't want to spend, the airport water refilling station is there. If you've watched my Vlog, it's the part where in there is a paper cups.  I was a bit amazed when I first saw the paper cups and I was like, that's cool.

TIP #3 EXCHANGE YOUR MONEY AT THE AIRPORT

Upon arrival at the airport, you're going to need some money to spend to buy some stuffs. There's a money changer as soon as you go out after picking up your luggage in the carousell area.

My friends chose to have there Php change to NT before leaving the country, they bought some NT in NAIA before our flight. They had an exchange rate of 1.85Php to 1NT that time.

But I chose to exchange my money as soon as I arrive in Taoyuan Airport. Since I have US dollar, the exchange rate will be higher to NT than if I chose to buy NT using Php.

1 US Dollar = 30NT

NOTE: The money changer at the airport only charges 0.30NT compared to having a money exchange at the local bank in Taiwan which charges 200NT.

I really regret that I didn't exchanged everything at the airport, and just had my other money exchanged at the bank a few days after our arrival. I didn't have an idea that it would cost that much.

SO NOW YOU KNOW GUYS!

TIP # 4 PORTABLE WIFI + SIM (Bought at the airport)

We live in a modern age, where in internet is a part of our life and we love to update our social media accounts on our whereabouts. So here's a very useful and economical tip that I can share with you guys. You don't have to register your sim for roaming and subscribe to a surf promo using your local network here in the country so you can use data when you're abroad. You don't also need to rent a portable wifi in the airport  or from an online shop.

What you'll need is just YOUR OWN PORTABLE POCKET WIFI which is not locked from any network (OPENLINE), so you can use any network and enjoy surfing.

So upon arrival at the airport, we decided to buy a simcard that is under a local network in Taiwan, what's cool about is for 5 days, you'll get unlimited data for only 300NT!

That's cheap!

And of course, having an internet connection in a foreign country is a way of survival, well that's our case. We can always use google maps, online translator so we could understand the things that we're not able to understand.

TIP # 5 MRT FOR TRANSPORTATION

There are a lot of ways to get around in Taiwan, there's MRT, BUS and TAXI. But we chose to use the MRT, because it's easier and faster than taking a ride by bus/taxi. You should be aware of the bus routes, if you will choose to get around by bus, there bus ride system is different than ours because they use bus route numbers for their destinations. MRT is very convenient for transportation and cheaper. Since most of the tourist spots can be accessed using MRT, we chose this as our mode of transportation.

NOTE: You can buy a card that is good for 1 week stay in the train station, so you don't have to buy chips whenever you're going to take train/bus ride.

But in our case, since we know that we won't be able to consume everything in the card, we chose to buy chips every time we're going to need it.

TIP #6 BOOK YOUR HOTEL/AIRBNB NEAR MRT STATIONS

It will be much easier to wander around the area and will be cheaper if you will stay near MRT stations. In our case, since our place is near the MRT Station, whenever we're going out, we will just walk to the nearest station and head to our destination.

We only took a cab like twice? It's because we are too tired that we don't want to walk anymore.

There are two options in taking a cab:

1. UBER - it's simple, just pin the place and you're good to go, no need to explain.

NOTE: Cash is not accepted, so you must connect your credit/debit card in your account as a mode of payment.

2. Hire a taxi

We're lucky enough that the driver is fluent in english so we we're able to understand each other and had a fast drive.

So here is our travel itinerary

You can find a lot of animals that is not present here in our tropical country. So if you're an animal lover, you must visit this place. There is just an entrance fee of 60NT.

From here you can also ride going to MAOKONG, however you can also go to Maokong without entering the zoo, because they have a station outside the zoo. In our case, we rode from the south station of Taipei Zoo going to Maokong Station, which costed us 70NT.

Harmonographs Generate Geometric Images Unique as Fingerprints

When my elder brother and I were kids back in the late 1970’s, our hacker Dad showed us this 1960-61 catalog of the Atlas Lighting Co (later Thorn Lighting) with an interesting graphic design on the cover. He told us to do a thought experiment, asking us to figure out how it would be possible to have a machine that would draw the design on that catalog cover.

Incorrectly, our first thought was that the design was created with a Spirograph. A spirograph has two main parts: a large ring with gear teeth on the inside and outside circumferences and a set of smaller, toothed wheels with holes in them for inserting a drawing instrument — usually a ball point pen. You hold the big ring, insert the pen in the smaller wheel, and then mesh and rotate the smaller wheel around the big ring. But spirographs can’t be used to draw irregular, asymmetrical figures. You could always recreate a design. Because of the nature of gears, none of them were unique, one off, designs.

We figured adding some lever arms, and additional geared wheels (compound gears) could achieve the desired result. It turns out that such a machine is called a Cycloid Drawing Machine. But even with this kind of machine, it was possible to replicate a design as often as required. You would fix the gears and levers and draw a design. If the settings are not disturbed, you can make another copy. Here’s a video of a motorized version of the cycloid machine.

The eventual answer for making such designs was to use a contraption called as the harmonograph. The harmonograph is unique in the sense that while you can make similar looking designs, it would be practically impossible to exactly replicate them — no two will be exactly the same. This thought experiment eventually led to my brother building his own harmonograph. This was way back when the only internet we had was the Library, which was all the way across town and not convenient to pop in on a whim and fancy. This limited our access to information about the device, but eventually, after a couple of months, the project was complete.

Getting the Swing of Things

It quickly dawned on us that using gears wasn’t the solution to this problem. A pendulum clock gave us some pointers about a plausible solution. Much later we learned that the earliest ‘lateral’ harmonographs consisted of single axis pendulums. One moved the pen laterally along the drawing platform, while the other moved the drawing platform perpendicular to the pen. Their limited movement resulted in Lissajous curves. If the pendulums were instead allowed more degrees of movement by fixing them to gimbals, more complex designs were possible.

But getting from theory to practice isn’t always easy. We could tie string to a pen and weigh it down with some weights, attach it to a hook, and swing it around. That might work, but we would need a spherical (concave) surface for the pen to make constant contact. Here’s an example that shows paint streaming out of a nozzle from a swinging container. Or we could use a free floating or spring damped pen which is able to move freely in the vertical axis to ensure that it is in contact with the paper while the pendulum swings around. [Jonathan Lansey] describes the construction of such a single pendulum harmonograph with a floating pen mechanism, along with a detailed mathematical analysis.

Our Prototype

After some more time with our thinking caps on, we finally had a good idea of how to build our device — a dual pendulum design, with one pendulum moving the pen and the other one moving the drawing platform. We could attach a rigid pendulum to a gimbal, fix a hinged lever on top of it and a pen at the end of the lever. Move the pendulum and the pen will move too, but will stay in constant contact with the paper because of the hinged lever. All we had in terms of plans was hand drawn sketches. We tried using material we had lying around, so there were a lot of changes going from sketches to finished parts. It helped that we had our own workshop with all the tools and machines needed to build it.

Our final design consisted of a welded steel frame that could be cantilevered to the edge of a table, so it wasn’t a self-standing design. The frame held two gimbals, each having a pendulum. One carried the pen lever with its counter weight, while the other was used to move the drawing platform. Adjusting the pendulum height changed the time constant, and adjusting the pen lever counter weight controlled how firmly the pen pushed on the paper. More weight caused friction, slowing down the pendulum faster. Less weight and the pen lines became whisker thin. The new version, seen in the video below, was built a couple of years back and is similar to the one we built in the ‘70’s, except it is completely self standing and portable.

Harmonograph Design Improvements

It’s possible to add additional degrees of movement to create even more stunning art. Instead of moving the pen via a single pendulum, you could use two pendulums and get the pen to move in an even more complex motion. [Karl Sims] describes the construction of such a three pendulum design which is simple to fabricate. Or you can attach two, or even three, pens and create multi-colored designs.

In 2017, with the comfort of having instant access to practically any kind of information, it’s easy to learn a lot more about the harmonograph than we could back in the ’70’s. For example, Vol 100, Issue 1389 of the New Scientist from 1983 features a nice one page overview of the harmonograph, giving some insight into its past history. And [Anthony Ashton]’s book Harmonograph: A Visual Guide to the Mathematics of Music is considered a definitive reference on this subject. Do a cursory search for harmonograph images in any search engine and you will have hundreds of beautiful pictures to admire.

In it, Gates described the Seattle home he was then building with inlaid fiber optic cables where each room would have its own unobtrusive touchpad to control the lights, music and temperature. Best of all, as you entered a room, it’d automatically customise those elements and even wall paintings (via LCD screens) based on personal preferences, all pinged via an electronic pin everyone in the house would wear. I was reminded of that moment from a quarter century ago as I listened to a recent webinar on access to the internet in India, organised by Agami, the law and justice organisation where I work. Much of Gates’ fantastic vision has become widely available today in the form of mobile phones, smart devices and apps – all of them powered by the internet, and what he then romantically called the Information Highway. Now in our elastically wrenching world, Gates is having another moment of prescience (as well as right-wing data hacks and conspiracy theories), this time with brighter sweaters and a thinner, papery voice. Whatever you think of him, he did baldly predict in his 2015 TED talk that “the greatest risk of global catastrophe” was not nuclear war but “most likely a highly infectious virus...not missiles but microbes”. The march of the internet into our lives, taking over every aspect and every hour, is so ubiquitous it doesn't need much emphasis or spelling out. And concurrently, neither does the fact that as more than a fifth of humanity frets under some form of lockdown and the rest practices swivel-eyed social distancing, we are all keeping up some semblance of normalcy by going online. A recent survey found that internet browsing shot up by 72 percent in the first week of lockdown in India. Online is where we are all talking and conferencing and texting, sharing parody videos, moving our money, dropping out of online courses, asking doctors about pulse oximeters, damning house cleaning bloggers, thanking recipe writers for using metric measurements, rediscovering celebrities for their shenanigans and, of course, unquenchably consuming the news and ordering more and more supplies even as we feel all Zoomed out. The new economy is not so new anymore, and it’s vital to say this aloud: Our economy is now vastly inaccessible without the internet. All the platforms, gateways and content are useless without it. Yet according to government data by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), only about half of Indians have access to the basic broadband speed of 512 Kbps or more. Last year’s IAMAI-Nielsen study found an even wider gap of only 36 percent of Indians having internet access in the first place. And only a third of them are women. This is not a digital divide anymore. This is a digital ditch. Which means, half to two-thirds of the country are in an economic ditch. Much of the high speed and reliable networks have been first laid in urban centres, and the work on Digital India programmes has not kept pace with the gradually devolving economy or the current COVID-19 crisis. Perhaps some of this slowness is due to decision makers still not quite accepting that the internet has moved this fast from being a useful luxury to an essential resource? Or is it more of a lingering bias that rural or disadvantaged Indians just don't need as much internet as people like us? Either way, the numbers tell a different story. Of all ‘regular users’ in India (who accessed the internet in the last 30 days), 40 percent are actually rural users – and that base is growing much faster than the urban one. More than 50 percent of rural customers are willing to go online to buy goods. Two thirds of all existing Indian internet users are in the 12-29 year age group, and in general this age group resides much more in rural than urban India. Data usage in rural India increased by almost 100 percent during the lockdown. And all this when rural internet penetration stands at only 27 percent (versus 51 percent in urban areas). In January, the Supreme Court declared access to the internet a fundamental right under Article 19 of the Constitution. This was in response to a plea on the internet blockade in Jammu & Kashmir since last summer’s revoking of Article 370. Since then, there has been only partial lifting of the digital ban there – only 2G speeds for postpaid mobiles while prepaid sims still have to get verified – despite mounting reports that lack of high-speed internet is hobbling the medical community and accelerating the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic in the region. Justice Badar Durrez Ahmed, retired Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir, as well as Rahul Matthan, Partner at Trilegal law firm, criticised such internet shutdowns at the Agami webinar. They both cited similar metaphors comparing the internet today to essential services like water and electricity, and how authorities don’t switch them off to some citizens when convenient. We put in suggestions that people who normally don’t have access somehow need to be given it because they’re the ones who need it the most.” Governments and companies worldwide are hustling to ensure that their citizens remain online. Chile is offering a “solidarity plan" for affordable internet in partnership with private companies, while Thailand has granted 10 GB of free data to mobile users. Egypt has given free SIM cards to students and borne the cost of a 20 percent increase in all subscribers' monthly downloads. In the US, the telecom regulator negotiated with more than 50 major internet providers to get them to agree to suspend data and speed caps, suspend shutoffs and late fees, waive installation fees, provide free service and other schemes for low-income users and open Wi-Fi hotspots for the public. Meanwhile, the major telecom and broadband companies in India have offered some initiatives like free incoming calls to low-income users, Airtel and BSNL have provided extended mobile validity and Rs 10 talktime free, while Jio Phone users have got 100 minutes and 100 SMS free. Meanwhile, ACT Fibernet has offered free upgrades of unlimited data and 300 Mbps speed, Jio Fiber has offered free 10 Mbps connections to new users and double data to existing ones, and Jio has offered free broadband in some places. Some say that in this crisis, the Indian government needs to pitch in much more such as reduce red tape to enable telecom companies to build capacity fast, incentivise them to increase data limits and subsidise costs, and even use disaster relief funds to build public Wi-Fi zones. There were a host of other solutions proposed at the webinar as well. Sundararajan said the government must build the infrastructure for 4G access for all Indians – and pointed out that this is actually possible in just 6-12 months – as well as finish the incomplete project to lay fiber optic cables for 2.5 lakh gram panchayats. Sundararajan and Apar Gupta, Executive Director of Internet Freedom Foundation, also recommended that the pending Data Protection Bill be enacted to address cybersecurity concerns as citizens go online. Justice Ahmed suggested engaging the local Legal Services Authorities across the country to provide internet and justice access to their constituencies, while Matthan emphasised the right to broadband rather than just internet as a more realistic need today. Gupta recommended voluntary pledges by telecom companies to not disconnect connections for non-payment during this crisis, actualising a network neutrality enforcement mechanism in telecom licenses for private entities, and regulatory reform in telecom suspension rules to guard against internet shutdowns. The non-profit Jan Sahas has reported that a significant proportion of the distress calls they’re receiving are actually requests to recharge mobile phone accounts. “In the next 12-24 months we’ll have restrictions of some kind,” said Sundararajan, “and the need for internet is only going to exponentially accelerate.” We can’t meaningfully talk about justice for the offline world anymore, given its sharp marginalisation from most mainstream social, political and economic activity. The fact is that those of us in the information or service economies are not the only ones who need the internet, not anymore. For most of this century, all Indians have needed it to lead fuller and fully connected lives; the big difference in the last few years is that we now also need it to be fuller consumers. And in a landscape that promises to be socially distanced for the next 1-2 years, all of us need it whether we are in the organised or unorganised sector. There is the case of access to justice, and there is the case for access to a healthy life. Getting all citizens online is surely the one reliable way to unite them in following mandates for the greater good while giving them a way to access basic needs. And getting everyone online would also surely create a permanent resource to help the Indian economy leap away from the cliff it’s getting overfamiliar with.
